5-Minute Craft: Terrarium Ornaments

Dreaming of a woodland Christmas?

Jason and I were thrilled to deck out our first Christmas tree, and we wanted to pay homage to its short life in the woods. Our little guy sports a mix of homemade, handmade, and store-bought decorations that add up to a whimsical, critter-filled tree. Here's how we did it.

First up: a terrarium ornament. This is super easy to craft, and it also makes a great gift for the moss lover in your life.

You'll need:

  • clear glass or plastic ornaments
  • preserved sheet moss (Save-On Crafts has a good selection of lichen mosses--bonus: you don't even have to remember to mist them!)
  • feathers or tiny pinecones
  • twine to tie the ornament to the tree
Make it:
  1. Place different varieties of moss inside the ornament. Top with a feather or pinecone.
  2. Tie a piece of twine or string to the top of the ornament, making a loop to hang it.

Sure, we could have crafted these metal muffin tins with a cheery gingham print and button. But Ikea did it for us, and they're totally adorable (and cheap--$5 for a pack of 4).

We scored this cuddly hedgehog at the Union Square Holiday Market. It's felted by artisans in Kryrgyzstan. Check out other ornaments from the collection here.

Woo your favorite Christmas-crazed nerd with a wooden love note ornament from Eavesmade, a Brooklyn-based company that hawks a "Heroes of Science" series. Our pick: a sketch of Charles Darwin that reads, "Let's evolve together." Aww.
