A few weeks ago, I hopped coasts to visit my dear friend Ginny in Palo Alto. Her little yellow house is even more picturesque than I'd imagined (check out this dreamy orange tree in her backyard!). For a gardening fiend, the San Francisco area is the land of plenty: rose bushes grow to shoulder height and burst with blooms the size of peonies; succulents cascade down bluffs at the seashore.
There are also a ton of plant-related attractions for those really inclined to geek out. Check out the old-school Conservatory of Flowers (an elegant Victorian-era building brimming with tropical plants) and enjoy the serenity of the Japanese Tea Garden (bonus: there's mochi). Want to grab some gifts for plant lovers back home? I freaked out over Roots, an unassuming shop in the Mission that stocks some great air plants and unique terrariums. While you're in the Mission, linger in Clarion Alley, where some of the local artists incorporate trailing blooms into their graphic designs. Genius!
