Adventures at the Country Living Fair

Lounging around with a new bovine buddy.

Last weekend, the Country Living crew donned our wellies and raincoats and headed up to rainy Rhinebeck, where we hosted our first-ever NY fair. (We've previously set up shop in Austin, Columbus, and Atlanta.) The trip got off to a somewhat ominous start. The weather wasn't exactly on our side: On Friday, we were damp and shivering like frizzy, waterlogged rats. On Sunday, temps soared into the high 80s and I felt like even my eyeballs were sunburned. But you know what? It was pretty much the best time ever. The downpour didn't deter crowds, and I talked to elderly blacksmiths, watched antiques appraisals, rabidly hunted for bargain buys, and bonded with my fellow staffers over delicious grub (eg: 'cue in a cup, a genius BBQ parfait consisting of layers of pulled pork, baked beans, corn bread, and 'slaw). Best of all, I met tons of readers who are totally psyched about the work that we do. Here are some highlights:

We crashed at the Beekman Arms, one of the nation's oldest hotels. (Legend has it has our man George Washington once got buzzed in the tavern!)

Our editor-in-chief, Sarah Gray, has a lovely house nearby. Lucky lady!

I couldn't resist the ephemera on display at the South Porch Antiques booth. Who wouldn't want a ribbon from a cat contest?!

Fresh blooms abounded.

This Airstream whips up mind-blowing maple milkshakes.

Jason came to hang out with us at the Duchess County Fairgrounds, where vendors hawked their wares in livestock stalls. Sadly, this cow is not real.

These noble cocks, however, were real. They were also really pricey--and so these taxidermy critters didn't come home with me to roost.

Back to the city.

Yep, it's a pretty good gig. So what did I haul back to Brooklyn? Arguably way too much! Stay tuned for photos of my loot.
