3 Nerdy Events Around NYC

Don't like the hipster affect fool you: this borough is crawling with nerds--including yours truly. Sure, I like a good latte, would sport an ironic mustache if I could grow facial hair, and just purchased a ukelele, but there's nothing that screams "Brooklyn" to me more than these geek-filled gatherings.

Brooklyn Skillshare

Love cultivating obscure talents? Of course you do! This is place to learn how to juggle, use Kool-Aid to dye silk scarves, and serve up a batch of ricotta cheese. (brooklynskillshare.org)

Brooklyn Brainery

This place hosts classes about everything: how to cream your Scrabble opponents; how to make soap without burning yourself/your friends/your pets with lye. I'm attending an upcoming lecture about serial killers, which seems ideal for people with a sense of morbid curiosity, or anyone navigating the waters of online dating. (brooklynbrainery.com)

The Society for the Advancement of Social Studies

Who doesn't miss Powerpoint presentations? They're even classier when you're a little bit wasted. In this monthly Williamsburg series, you can swig beer while listening to enthusiastic erudites wax poetic about everything from Civil War beards to the eww-ick-gross history of surgery.
