There's an elephant in our living room, in the shape of a big black bookshelf.
This hulking piece of furniture is all scuffed up and out of place in our airy, colorful home. But I can't bring myself to part with it. It's one of the few things from my childhood bedroom that's still hanging on. (Plus, my parents rented a U-Haul and carted it here from Michigan. Through SoHo. On a Saturday. I feel like that deserves some kind of accolade.)
For a long time, Jason and just let the shelf sit empty. (We've got built-in bookshelves in our bedroom, so we have no shortage of space for our tomes.) Then we started piling random stuff on it. Empty or full of odds and ends, it felt like a disorganized afterthought...and its ugliness became sort of a touchy subject.
So, in the name of aesthetics and marital bliss, I decided to give the clunker a bit of a facelift.
The supplies:
- wrapping paper (a pale sand-colored damask from the $1 section at Target)
- measuring tape
- pencil
-scissors
- double-sided tape
I measured the paper to fit (although it's a little spotty in the corners...) and affixed with double-sided tape. (Convenient in case we decide to change it up later.) Since the pattern is so understated, it was easy to smooth out multiple sheets for full coverage without it looking sloppy. I put our vintage bottle and teacup collection to work holding fresh fronds and foliage, and a few cheerful carnations.
Now this guy's not just taking up living room real estate: he's anchoring the space.
