Travel Diary: Hudson Valley

The Catskills in the distance, snow-covered pines outside the window, skeins of cozy yarn waiting to be crocheted, and stacks of antique books piled on a shelf. This weekend has been pretty darn picturesque.

The Hudson Valley is simply gorgeous. It's just nice to see a surface other than concrete. Yep, it's nippy, but bring some thermals and mittens and get outside! I recommend a stroll near Lake Minnewaska, antiquing in New Paltz, and a snack at The Alternative Baker in Rosendale. The bakery is renowned for melt-on-your-tongue lemon cakes, but I'm a fiend for their focaccia, too. (Laden with olives, sundried tomatoes, and rosemary, it's worth of fighting over. We devour it in the parking lot. By the time we get to the highway, we're basically licking crumbs out of the bag.)

The wide-open space makes me homesick. As a teenager, I always thought that I was meant to be a city girl, scuttling around the sidewalks in heels. Turns out, not so much. Sure, there are a lot of things I like about the city: new restaurants on every corner, wonderful exhibitions and performances, and a job that excites and challenges me. But deep in my marrow, I'm a country girl. I feel my whole body relaxing the second the skyline slips away from the rearview mirror--like even my bones are exhaling. Even though I'm not a local, every trip to the Hudson Valley feels like coming home.
