Something Fishy

So far, Jason and I have killed two betta fish this year. It starts out like this: we're psyched to have a pet, we spend hours picking a name, I print out a blurry iPhone pic of our new babe and post it on my work computer. Then, within a few weeks, the poor little guy is belly up, and I furtively crumple the photo before I have to fess up to another one biting the dust.

I had pretty much given up on the idea of being fish parents until I saw this crazy new gadget from Back to the Roots--the company behind the ubiquitous box of mushrooms sprouting from coffee grounds. Dreamed up by two whippersnappers from UC Berkley, this fish tank doubles as an herb garden. The fish's natural waste fertilizes the plants, which in turn clean up the water. Genius! I'm still mourning the loss of Sam, our most recent gilled casualty. Not yet ready to give my heart to another.  Have any of you guys tried this out? How did it go? Let me know in the comments!
