5-Minute Craft: Cork Jewelry Rack

My pal Emily spends a lot of time writing about gender, sexuality, and culture over at her blog, Rosie Says. (If you don't read it, start now!) Sometimes, she also drinks wine, and that means lots of gratis craft supplies! Luckily for us, she's sharing a tutorial for her boozy brainchild--a jewelry rack made from wine corks. Get the how-to below. (Remember, kiddos: sober up before you grab that hot glue gun!)

The I-Drink-A-Lot-Of-Wine Jewelry Rack

This is a project for all those folks with a) a bucket/vase/bowl embarrassingly full of wine corks and b) a pile of tangled jewelry in need of some serious love.
You'll need:
  • Wooden yardstick (or ruler, for a shorter version)
  • Approximately 40 wine corks (Note: champagne corks can be used for extra texture, but most of the rack will be wine corks)
  • Glue gun and 3 or 4 glue sticks
  • 20 to 30 screw hooks of various sizes and color
  • 2 nails
  • Hammer
Make it:
1. Lay out your corks and make sure you have enough to cover the length of your yardstick. You can align them all vertically, or alternate between vertical corks and a stack of two horizontal corks.

2. Use the glue gun to cover the yardstick with cork except the first and last inch (which will be used for mounting). Be liberal with the glue!

3. When the glue is dry, twist the hook hooks directly into the corks. Make sure to leave space between hooks for bracelets or big beaded necklaces.

4. To mount, nail one end of the yardstick into the wall. Use a level to adjust the other end before nailing it in. Glue in the final two corks to cover the nails at either end. Hang your jewelry!
