Part of the fun of container gardening is hunting for the perfect container. Sure, there are advantages to using run-of-the-mill plastic or terracotta pots (water retention, good drainage, etc.), but there are so many ways to get creative with repurposed objects.
Apartment Therapy did a great roundup of creative containers. I'm enamored with these gardens growing in colanders and tubs:
This morning, I upcycled a decorative watering can into a cute container for some alyssum seeds. It couldn't have been easier.
Just use a hammer and nail to make little holes in the bottom of the can. If you're using a container with thicker metal, you might need to bust out the power tools. Even so, this project will take five minutes, max. So simple, and so cute.
If you don't happen to have a galvanized steel tub lying around, no worries. Based in Brooklyn? The cool kids at Kings County Salvage can hook you up with wooden boxes, old kettles, perfectly-rusted tins, and tons of other containers begging to be turned into plant containers. If you can't hit a flea market, head to Etsy Vintage for lots of great finds, like this one.
